Meet Maria

Kayla Graham

Here at Content Callout, we spend a lot of time telling you a variety of tips and tricks to make your content marketing and social media stand out. But we thought we’d take a second to introduce some of the team behind-the-scenes who keep everything running.

Meet our awesome writing manager, Maria Berlando! Maria is the wizard behind-the-scenes, correcting grammar and making sure our content, and our clients’ content, shines. She’s always helping us to make sure our articles and blogs educate, entertain, and more.

Guilty pleasure – books, music, etc.
Not that I feel too guilty about any of these, but I enjoy old school music like disco, punk, and new wave; sketch comedy: Kids in the Hall, Portlandia, At Home with Amy Sedaris; historical fiction, like Paula McLain’s books about the Hemingway wives; David Sedaris’ touching and hilarious essays; and graphic novels like Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis—plus many more.

What’re your favorite podcasts you’re listening to?
Throwing Shade, which is a hilarious political comedy podcast with fresh takes on pop culture, women’s rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. Ellum Radio with Maceo Plex is my go-to for bike rides, and Grammar Girl for all things grammar.

Who inspires you?
Thankfully there are many inspiring people out there: my close friends and family, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Malala Yousafzai, and Margaret Atwood, to name a few.

What are your business or personal growth books?
I find fiction or non-fiction novels about people living through and overcoming adversity help me grow personally. However, here are some personal growth books I’ve enjoyed (though this first one is more geared toward writing growth): Steering the Craft by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson, and The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown.

What’s your favorite pop icon?
Some of my fave music icons are Tori Amos, Deborah Harry (Blondie!), David Bowie, Prince, and Janelle Monae. And there’s always Madonna.

What’s your favorite movie?
It’s impossible to pick just one…but if I had to, it would be The English Patient. Honorable mentions go to Blade Runner (including Bladerunner 2049), The Royal Tenenbaums, and most things Greta Gerwig or David Lynch.

What’s your favorite local pub, wherever you are?
Citizen. It’s in my area, and the staff, food, and drinks are great.

What’s your favorite travel destination?
I can’t pick one place! But I loved Laos, especially Vang Vieng—there’s nothing like it. (I also fell in love with Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, Italy, France, Thailand, Bali, and more).

What’s your favorite local coffee shop?
I’m a tea drinker now, and I recently discovered Sought & Found in Crescent Heights. And their matcha latte was impressive—and the staff and atmosphere were great, too.

What’s your favorite retail shop?
Purr, Feisty, Simons.

Favorite creative account on Instagram
It’s all about the creative comedy: @amysedaris or @athomewithamysedaris & @gibbletron

Any other local shout-outs you want to give
